for very good reason. americans want to know what president obama's foreign policy is going for. because of situations that seem to be forever in the lexicon of our conversation. certainly in afghanistan with what we've seen happening there. so karen, with that being said, can the president sharpen what he wants to say knowing that's going to be a vulnerable spot for him. mitt romney wants to prove that americans go through strength. and president obama may not have that philosophy. >> peace through strength is a nice slogan, but the president has unfortunately the burden of knowing the facts on the ground and knowing what is possible and what is not possible. foreign policy is complicated. there are multiple layers in the middle east right now. what the president needs to do and i do agree there are lots of questions about what actually happened a few weeks ago in libya and egypt. he's got to handle that in the context of his presidency, not so much a campaign certainly during the foreign policy debate i think there'll be a robust conversation about different strategies. the other point

and tried to convince americans that president obama is some sort of race monger. i think it would back fire. >> what if president obama and we believe he dual that leslie says you are trying to divide americans 47%. you don't believe they are worthy. it seems to me fairly powerful defense saying wait a minute. taking my remarks out of context. you said this about race. you said this about wealthy people. no, yes? is that a shield he should use? i don't think mitt romney should bring up anything with race. he should clarify 47% remark. i think because tonight is really about trying to get back some of that small lead that the president has and trying to close that gap in the polls that the president is leading by right now. that is what mitt romney needs to accomplish tonight with the people watching. those that are already going to vote for mitt romney and those especially in the african-american community with approximately 90% lead by the president are going to vote for the president. i think it will be political suicide. i think it would be disaster. it doesn't help likability. >> bill:

obama donors. >> greta: first the african american issue. it's a 14% versus 11%. could that 3% differential, is that so significant as to skew the polls? i mean, is that a huge massager? >margin?>> well, it's a three-point-point margin. in other words if you have a poll showing romney losing by five, he's only losing by two. the latinos bring it to even, and the young people give romney an edge. when you look at all of these polls, you go by what is the most likely turnout, not the eight turn out, a lot less, maybe more than far, but less than 2008. you get to what rasmussen has, who does it properly, a tie race. when you have a tie race, greta, it's an advantage for romney, because the undecided vote always goes against the incumbent. that's how reagan got elected. carter was six points ahead of him seven days out, and carter lost by nine because the undecided always went to the challenger. when you're undecided you're basically saying you don't like the incumbent. >> greta: if you take today's numbers, instead of weighting them to the 2008 election, weight them to 2004 or 20
is that good for president obama? given the president's support among african-americans, latinos and other voters, governor romney needs to keep the president to 37%, no more than 38% of the white vote. if the president's cracking 47% of the white vote, that's a formula for an obama victory. and where are the key big battleground states? there are several in the midwest. ohio, iowa, wisconsin. look at the race in the midwest. obama, 52%, romney, 43%. the president is winning that part of the country. out west in denver, colorado, nevada, among the battlegrounds out here in the west. ten-point lead in the west for the president. 54% to 44%. the white vote and if you look regionally, there are things that give the president's team some optimism. >> if you're the romney campaign looking at these new poll numbers, what should give the romney folks some optimism? >> reporter: one of the reasons we are back in a closer race, a statistical dead heat nationally f you go state by state, it's a little different, this number, governor romney has improved his standing among independents. he leads by e
